Hubble and JWST Image Processing in PixInsight

Use the right correction for the right defect. BB-Astro provides free PixInsight scripts and open research workflows for cosmic-ray removal, detector artifacts, Hubble destriping and linear-image denoising, with inspectable results and explicit limits.

Start with the data

A correction chain built around physical defects

Space telescope images are not finished photographs. Depending on the product, they can still contain cosmic-ray hits, detector-row structure, residual gradients and random noise. A useful workflow keeps these problems separate instead of asking one denoiser to hide all of them.

Work on linear data whenever the method models noise or additive detector structure. Inspect masks and removed models before continuing, and keep the unmodified science image beside the result.

For individual calibrated exposures, remove cosmic rays before registration or stacking with LACosmic or DeepCR. For a linear drizzled ACS/WFC mosaic, StripeField can model weak row-bias families that drizzle has projected to oblique angles. DIPL handles a single linear image, while AstroSURE is designed around paired Hubble exposures.

JWST

JWST image processing

Residual sharp events can be tested with LACosmic on calibrated linear frames, with the detection mask checked carefully against stars and compact structure. Hubble-trained models and the current global StripeField method are not presented as universal JWST corrections because JWST mosaics can contain detector-dependent and region-dependent structure.

Cosmic rays

LACosmic uses Laplacian detection and an explicit gain and read-noise model. DeepCR provides a model trained on Hubble images.

General astrophotography

PixInsight scripts for CCD and CMOS images

The same defect-first approach applies to ground-based astrophotography. CosmeticCorrection addresses hot and cold pixels, LinearPatternCorrection targets defective detector lines, and LACosmic can clean long individual exposures before alignment and integration.

Installation

Install from the BB-Astro repository

Add the repository to PixInsight once, apply the available updates and restart. Current scripts support PixInsight 1.9.4 on macOS and Linux, with legacy packages retained where available.
